Modelling water quality in rivers and estuaries with Iber
Accés obert

The Professor Ernest Baldé i Castellet (UPC) presents the Water Quality module of Iber model during the 8th GiD Convention (CIMNE). He shows the equations were implemented and the capabilities using real cases.
Iber is a GiD based numerical model for simulating turbulent free surface unsteady flow and environmental processes in river hydraulics. The traditional ranges of application of Iber cover river hydrodynamics, dam-break simulation, flood zones evaluation, sediment transport calculation and tidal flow in estuaries. Since mid-2015 Iber includes a Water Quality module.
The Water Quality model has been developed in order to compute the evolution in space and time of pollutants in non-stratified rivers and estuaries. For that purpose, a depth averaged convection-diffusion transport equation is solved for each of the considered substances. That equation includes reactive source terms to model transformations and interactions between substances.
At present the following substances and variables are included: salinity, temperature, Escherichia Coli, dissolved oxygen, carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD), organic nitrogen, ammoniacal nitrogen and nitrites/nitrates. The substances can be introduced in the water flow as boundary conditions in inlets, or as punctual sources in any point of the domain. The simulations are performed together with the hydrodynamics of the flow.
