Construction of a well for bank filtration for wastewater reclamation in India-SWINGS project

SWINGS "Safeguarding water resources in India using green and sustainable technologies" is a collaborative project funded by the European Union FP7 program and the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India, whose aim is to implement low-cost sustainable technologies for wastewater treatment and reuse in rural areas of India. These comprise anaerobic digestion and constructed wetlands, as well as several low-cost disinfection techniques for tertiary treatment of wastewater, which will allow its subsequent reutilization in various applications (www.swingsproject.eu).
This video shows the construction of a well to test the capacity of the river bank to filter and purify wastewater, which is part of the activities that have been developed in one of the sites of the project, in Kalyani, West Bengal. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme under grant agreement No. 308502.

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)
BOD is an empiric laboratory assay which measures the amount of organic matter contained in a water sample.
This assay is the most widely used method for the assessment of water quality
