Can Mathematics help to understand how does the brain work?. Curs Noether (2008-2009)

How does the brain work is one of the most intriguing questions for the 21st century: what are the logical rules that the brain follows in motor and cognitive processes? Several projects are carried out in our lab (Neuromathlabin the Brain Centerin Bar-Illan University) trying to use mathematics to help understand the brain. We use a wide spectrum of methods from Differential Geometry, Topology, Statistics, Data Mining, Liner algebra, and more, and we collaborate with scientist from other disciplines like Neurophysiology, Neuro-surgery, Electrical Engineering, Psychology, and more. In the talk I'll mention 7 projects and will elaborate on 3 of them.

Starting with a look at Hilbert's famous 1890 paper, which was considered at one time to have dealt the deathblow to Invariant Theory, and which inluded the famous Basis Theorem and Syzygy Theorem, we will trace some developments in commutative noetherian ring theory such as the Hilbert Function, homological dimension, global dimension of local rings, determinant alvarieties,and then make a natural return to some of the rings of invariants studied in that same Hilbert paper. While this arc will constitute the main structure of the talk,I may digress into some other related areas,such as characteristic-free representation theory of the general linear group.

Se definirán las funciones theta de una variable y se explicará su relación con la teoría de funciones elípticas. Se dará una introducción a la teoría de formas modulares y a la relación entre la función theta y la función zeta de Riemann.
Finalmente comentaremos las generalizaciones a varias variables y su interpretación geométrica en términos de las variedades abelianas.

Se hará una introducción a la teoría de códigos convolucionales y a continuación describiremos la construcción de códigos convolucionales como códigos de valoración en una familia uniparamétrica de curvas algebraicas. Los casos de las curvas de géneros cero y uno se estudiaran con detalle.
