“We must position the university in the centre of the social scenery and make it an engine of economic growth, quality of life and social cohesion and progress”

Francisco Michavila, director of the UNESCO Chair of University Management and Policy at the Technical University of Madrid spoke to us of the main challenges that must be faced by the Spanish higher education system within the European Higher Education Area. He also spoke about the role the university should play in society from the perspective of social responsibility. Francisco Michavila took part in the round table entitled “Accreditation in the EHEA” during the Third International Barcelona Conference on Higher Education: “Accreditation for the Quality Assurance: What is at Stake?”

Carlos Tünnermann spoke to GUNI about quality and relevance of higher education at Central America

Carlos Tünnermann, ex-Minister for Education in Nicaragua and current president of the Central American Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CCA), spoke to us of the current situation and of the challenges to be faced in the assessment and accreditation of quality in Central America. For Tünnermann, it is fundamental for the development of the region that the quality of higher education in Central America continues improving. He stressed the need to develop a regional vision which will have an impact on improving research and the university network in Central American countries. Carlos Tünnermann gave the inaugural speech “University, pertinence, quality and accreditation in a globalised world” at the III International Barcelona Conference on Higher Education: “Accreditation for Quality Assurance: What is at Stake?”

Science Shops may play an important role in developing trust and community participation in knowledge, science and technology creation processes

Manon Vaal has been promoting the growth of science shops both in the Netherlands and abroad. She talked about the role of science shops as intermediate organizations between society and science. Ms. Vaal also talked about the evolution that science shops have experienced since their appearance 30 years ago. She presented her work at the session “Accreditation and social commitment of higher education” during the III GUNI International Conference on Higher Education “Accreditation for quality assurance: What is at stake?”.

Marco Antonio Rodrigues Dias spoke to GUNI on higher education trends and the challenges to be faced in the coming years. He believes that the principles approved by the WCHE in 1998 and the concept of education as a public good continue to be valid

Marco Antonio Rodrigues Dias, the United Nations University representative at UNESCO, and Hans J. A. van Ginkel, rector of the same university, presented the paper entitled 'The Institutional and Political Challenges of Accreditation in the International Sphere' at the Third International Barcelona Conference on Higher Education, 'Accreditation for Quality Assurance: What Is at Stake?'.

Aconseguir l’èxit mitjançant les aliances: la col·laboració universitària activa

La conferència se centra en les línies de col·laboració entre la biblioteca i les escoles i facultats de la Universitat de Sheffield que s’han desenvolupat al llarg dels últims quatre anys. Aquesta col·laboració s’ha materialitzat en nous serveis com els campus digitals, els materials docents, la digitalització de materials, els cursos per al desenvolupament de les habilitats informacionals, els dipòsits d’objectes d’aprenentatge…

L’element clau a Sheffield ha estat el diàleg proactiu que s’ha establert entre el personal acadèmic i les biblioteques. Una línia de col·laboració i diàleg que s’ha estès a altres serveis de la universitat i que ha tingut un impacte molt positiu per als usuaris però també per a les persones que treballen a la universitat.

Peter Stubley també farà una breu descripció del nou edifici d’Information Commons que s’ha inaugurat recentment a la universitat.

Los cambios en el modelo docente ante el EEES

La construcció de l’Espai Europeu d’Educació Superior i, en particular, el sistema europeu de crèdits, planteja canvis profunds en el paradigma docent, que han de canviar radicalment el paper que juguen els professors i els alumnes dins i fora de classe. L’objectiu final consisteix en un veritable canvi de model educatiu caracteritzat per la programació d’assignatures centrades en l’aprenentatge de l’alumne i orientat a l’adquisició de competències.

Mala Singh talked to the GUNI about the present and the future of higher education in Africa, which she thinks can help overcome ethnic conflicts by strengthening a common African identity

The executive director of the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC) of the Council on Higher Education, Mala Singh, believes that an African higher education area is still in its infancy and that governments need to implement effective measures to assure quality and recognize qualifications across the continent. Ms. Singh also talked about how higher education in Africa can contribute to social goals and discussed the need to create more stable social and political environments in order to fight brain drain. Ms. Singh presented the paper ‘The Governance of Accreditation’ at the 3rd International Barcelona Conference on Higher Education: Accreditation for Quality Assurance: What is at Stake?
